Comparing Taylor Swift’s Original ‘Lover’ Lyrics With the Shawn Mendes Remix: Here’s What’s Changed

Improving on one of Taylor Swift's most intimate, thoughtful lyrics is a big ask. But Shawn Mendes was more than up to the task when his old pal Taylor asked him to give the title track to her "Lover" album a remix in the form of a new verse and some additions to the swaying song's chorus.

The revamped version of the tune dropped as a surprise on Wednesday (Nov. 13) morning, with Swift leaving the track itself untouched with the exception of Mendes' additional backing vocals and new lyrical additions.

Check out the changes below.

First Verse/Chorus

Original: "We could leave the Christmas lights up 'til January/ This is our place, we make the rules/ And there's a dazzling haze, a mysterious way about you, dear/ Have I known you 20 seconds or 20 years?/ Can I go where you go?/ Can we always be this close?/ Forever and ever/ And ah, take me out, and take me home/ You're my, my, my, my lover."

New Second Verse

Mendes (with Swift backing vocals): “We could light a bunch of candles/ And dance around the kitchen, baby/ Pictures of when we were young would hang on the wall/ We would sit on the stoop/ I'll sing love songs to you when we're eighty/ See, I finally got you now, honey, I won't let you fall."

Second Chorus

Mendes and Swift together: "Can I go where you go?/ Can we always be this close forever and ever?/ And ah, take me out, and take me home (Forever and ever)/ You're my, my, my, my lover."

Orignal Second Verse (cut from remix):

Swift: We could let our friends crash in the living room/ This is our place, we make the call/ And I'm highly suspicious that everyone who sees you wants you/ I've loved you three summers now, honey, but I want 'em all.

Orignal Second Bridge:

Swift: "Ladies and gentlemen, will you please stand?/ With every guitar string scar on my hand/ I take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover/ My heart's been borrowed and yours has been blue/ All's well that ends well to end up with you/ Swear to be overdramatic and true to my lover/ And you'll save all your dirtiest jokes for me/ And at every table, I'll save you a seat, lover."

New Second Bridge:

Swift and Mendes: (Swift) Ladies and gentlemen, will you please stand?/ With every guitar string scar on my hand/ I take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover/ (Mendes) Look in my eyes, they will tell you the truth/ The girl in my story has always been you/ I'd go down with the Titanic, it's true, for you/ (Together) Lover/ And you'll save all your dirtiest jokes for me/ And at every table, I'll save you a seat, lover (Save you a seat).

The final chorus is essentially unchanged, with Mendes adding an ad-lib and backing vocals (seen below in italics).

Final Chorus

Swift and Mendes: "Can I go where you go? (Can I go where you go, baby?)/ Can we always be this close forever and ever?/ And ah, take me out, and take me home (Forever and ever)/ You're my, my, my, my
Oh, you're my, my, my, my/ Darling, you're my, my, my, my lover."

Swift lauded the personal touch Mendes added to the title track of her latest album, saying, "And I also think that everybody would write a different love letter to their lover and I think his take on it is so beautiful."
