Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien Pens Letter Detailing Debut Solo Album & Teases Upcoming Single ‘Brasil’

Radiohead's guitarist Ed O'Brien has had his debut solo album in the works since it was first recorded in fall 2017. But it required the right amount of time (about two years) and right place (Brazil) for O'Brien to shape the record he'll be ready to release next year, starting with its first single "Brasil," coming out Thursday (Dec. 5).

The guitarist penned a letter to the "brothers and sisters of the Radiohead family" today (Dec. 2), detailing his forthcoming debut solo album and the long-winded journey it took for him to get there.

When the musician first moved to Brazil in 2012 following the English rock band's The King of Limbs tour, he described his and his family's "truly profound experience" meeting new people and places, including attending Carnaval in Rio in 2013 that served as "one of those musical eureka moments," as a catalyst for his solo project.

He boasts of the star-studded all-hands-on-deck effort that went into his currently untitled album. The first single to come off the album, "Brasil," as well as the entire LP was produced by Grammy award-winning record producer Flood (U2) and his former co-worker Catherine Marks (The Killers). Brit award-winning producer/mixer Alan Moulder (Nine Inch Nails) mixed the album, while The Invisible member David Okumu, Nathan East, Omar Hakim, Laura Marling, Portishead's own Adrian Utley, Glenn Kotche of Wilco, and fellow Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood are musical guests on the project.

To close the note, he promised to embark on a proper tour following the album's release. "So we’ll be out there in 2020 and hope to see you at some of the shows. This feels like the start of something new and truly significant for me…," he wrote. "It has felt like a calling… I have to do this…."

Big love to you all. Ed x
