When the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame hit Barclays Center on Friday (March 29) to induct the Class of 2019, it was still a big question mark if anyone from Radiohead would be there.
Well, the band didn’t perform, and they didn’t show up in full, but drummer Phil Selway and guitarist Ed O’Brien did show up to accept the honor, and they seemed genuinely touched.
“This is a beautifully surreal evening for us,” O’Brien said. “It is a big fucking deal and it feels like it…. I wish the others could be here, they would be feeling it.”
In his speech, Selway admitted they weren’t the easiest band in the world by any measure. “It can be awkward and challenging, but I guess that’s what’s kept us all interested for the past three decades,” Selway said. He also thanked David Byrne -- whose Talking Heads song “Radio Head” from True Stories inspired their band name -- for giving their induction speech... and for not asking for the name back.
As for Byrne’s introduction, he admitted he had no idea why one of his “goofy Tex-Mex songs” inspired Radiohead. And for his part, he said he never wants to find out.
